Matthew Good- Avalanche/ Hospital Music

With Matthew Good's newest solo album, Vancouver, expected later in 2009, I thought I would start doing real reviews with what I thought were his two greatest solo efforts, 2003's Avalanche and 2007's Hospital Music. I will say right now that I was not a fan of White Light Rock And Roll Review.

Avalanche

Somehow Matthew Good started off his solo career with one of the best debut solo albums I have heard. His change in style in his solo efforts compared to the Matthew Good Band is significant, and yet at the same time should not leave Matthew Good Band fans disappointed, which is hard to do. Also one will notice he has a lot more social commentary across this album, but he doesn't use it too much or shove opinions in your face, so it does not bother me. I am also going to make a note on the album cover, which doesn't appear to be much, but I find the picture of him looking confused in an empty room paints a perfect picture for his solo career. Anyways, here goes.

Pledge Of Allegiance- The first thing I notice about this song, which is really just a tease to what is so apparent across the entire CD, is that the production value of this album is off the wall. Every sound used is perfectly selected to fit its specific purpose in the song. Next thing you will notice is that this IS NOT a rock album, it comes close at some points, but through and through it is a departure from his earlier rock albums. Next there is the introduction to several instruments that are not just guitar, drums, bass and the occasional piano, but he does not use them too much, which I find is the failure of a lot of rock artists gone solo. Anyways, this song is the perfect start to the album because it gives a nice overview of the new sound he is striving for. The church bells are damn cool too, I have never been able to fit church bells (although I have tried soo hard) without the decaying verb on it sounding off key, so he has my envy on that one.

Lullaby For The New World Order- This is one of my least favorite tracks on the album, which is extremely strange because when I first bought Avalanche it was one of my favorite. I find that the vocals seem a bit to scattered in the verses to properly lead into the epic-ness that is the chorus. Within the first ten seconds you will notice the down scale strings, and the drum fill leading up to when the drums actually come in does fit very nicely. I love the huge spacey atmosphere in the choruses, and the minutely distorted sounding guitar that starts around 2:25 is a very nice touch.

Weapon- This is the first single off the record that launched Mathew Good's solo career, and it is perfectly selected. The verses bring out a lot that is his new sound, very spacey sounding acoustic guitar and long drawn out vocal lines, but he brings it up a notch to a sound that is a bit more evolved then his bands work, but would find a lot of Matthew Good bands fans happy to see he has not changed too much. Yelling "never turn your back on it" right before the first chorus comes in sounds incredible.

In A World Called Catastrophe- This is the other single off of the album, and the instant full band with distorted guitar is influenced by his earlier work, but as soon as the vocals kick in you can hear he is bringing something new to the table. Also, the bridge between the verse and the chorus's when he says "Remember how we started, since then I'm a waste" with the solo acoustic guitar playing is very well placed. This is a damn good song.

Avalanche- One of my two favorite tracks off of the album, everything about this song is a complete departure from the Matthew Good Band, and its for the better. While this song does take a while to get into it, it is worth the patience. As soon as he starts yelling "Avalanche" with his full band backing him up you just know that the long intro relates and is worth it. The transition between the acoustic guitar and clean electric sound is incredible. The second verse is mostly just samples played in the background of eerie instrumentals, so don't be hoping for a sing along, but it continues the vibe of this song very well. Instead of breaking back into the chorus after, he throws you one of the best bridges his has. The simple repeating of chords on the acoustic guitar in the background and then the way the vocals match up with the electric guitar overtop of that is just unbelievable. When the drums comes back in it forms such a powerful vibe. He then cuts back into the chorus perfectly and rocks the house for the rest of the track, minus the last ten seconds when he repeats "one foot in front of the other", brings the song full circle and closes it perfectly.

21st Century Living- This song seems like it was written specifically for the lyrical content, like he was pissed off and just threw down some electronic sounding instrumentals to fit with what was on his mind. The back up singers are a very nice touch, and then the rock sounding chorus is nice, this song is nothing too special, but entertaining none the less.

While We Were Hunting Rabits- This is my other favourite track off of the album, and the vocals near the end are some of his best. I am a huge fan of the Timpani drum fills. I do find that most of this song is just average, but once it gets quieter at around 3:30 I think he shows some of the best vocals I have heard from him. The high pitched change up compared to the first verse is very powerful, but once he starts repeating "I'm Just A Boat On The Ocean, I'm Just A Ship Lost At Sea" it takes my breath away every single time. Especially when he comes in with the higher pitch louder version, and then the multi tracked version right after that, then the song cuts and he repeats it once more over a solo acoustic guitar. It ends perfectly..... except for the 2 minutes after that of just randomn sounds, I usually don't listen to that.

Bright End Of Nowhere- The song just sounds like it relates to you for some reason, and there is good lyrical content in it. The overdubbed reverbed electric guitar in the verses is very well done. The almost bassey sounding guitar in the chorus matches up with his voice very well, then the piano and string arrangement bringing it back into the verse is done well.

Near Fantastica- The song sounds like he got high and started to miss the Matthew Good Bands later work. The reverse guitar sounds in the verses is really well done, I usually find electronicly reversing guitar sounds usually makes it sound a bit off time, but it fits here. The drum sounds feel like they were picked out by Revrend Run, due to the hip hop sounding kick and snare, but the beat is still a standard rock set up. This song clocks out at 8 minutes, which I find is a bit too long due to I am not a huge fan of this track, deffinitly goes under the short list that is filler on this album.

Song For The Girl- Acoustic guitar verses, you can hear him trying to push his voice too new boundaries, and doing it well. I don't know how he made that synth sound not stupid, but somehow he did. There is not much to say about this song due to its so standard, but its still a very good listen.

Double Life- This is anouther song I find to be a bit of filler, I will listen to it if I have time for a full play through, but if I'm just driving around or something it always gets skipped over. This sounds like its a B-Side from The Audio Of Being.

A Long Way Down- I really like the piano in this one, its nothing too special, it just fits very well. This is a good song to end the album because it has nothing too do with his earlier career, and it seems to be hinting that he plans on consistently changing his style and putting out enjoyable but ever changing record. I was dissappointed by White Light Rock And Roll Review, which was released two years later, but when Hospital Music came out I feel as if he is in a very good place with his solo career.

Hospital Music

Champions Of Nothing- I find this to be one of the best intro songs on any album, certainly my favorite Matthew Good track, solo or otherwise. Clocking out at 9 minutes and 30 seconds it could throw off the occasional listener who just picked up the album because they liked the folk rock stylings of the first single, "born loser". Anyways, this track starts off with some vocal samples and a bit of minimalistic acoustic guitar strumming and a synth for about the first minute and a half, which CAN get kind of boring, but as soon as the vocals kick in it becomes one of my favorite tracks ever, this is deffinitly one that should have the whole thing sat through on several occasions, I find myself liking it more everytime I hear it.

A Single Explosion- You can hear his extreme departure from perfection to honesty in this track. He left the perfectly crafted multi tracked vocal lines and extreme over dubbing to find himself starting off this song with a single acoustic guitar and singing in such a way that it sounds like he wrote this song for no one but himself, mumbling along about his short comings, then half way through a full band comes in too drive this song home. Its a good one too.

Metal Airplanes- Another extremely honest sounding song by a man who seems that he would like people to start focusing more on what he is saying as oppose too the fact that his songs "rock". Just him and an acoustic guitar again, continuing with the general atmosphere of the album.

99% Of Us Are Failure- Starts off as a very down tempo electronic song, but the full band does come in for a nice mix of real and sythesised instruments. Another song, which I think this applies to the whole album, that is almost 100% based off of his vocals and what he is saying. While the instrumentals are still very good, I don't believe thats what you are going to focus on.

Born Losers- We have all heard this song by this point, it was on the radio every ten minutes back in 2007. This is his most accessable song on the album, having it as a catchy folk rock song. First single off of the album and was a good pick, this track is nothing but an easy way to get into this album. Its not my favorite that Hospital Music has to offer, but I do really really like the bridge.

Odette- This song sounds like he wrote the skeleton of it during at the same time as the rest of Hospital Music, but like it was recorded/ tracked during the Avalanche period. This is of course impossible, but it does hold this vibe for me, due to it still sounds like an extremely honest song, but has the extreme multi-tracking that was Avalanche. This is another one of the better tracks on the album, I love the slow sliding/ bending on the "lead" guitar during the intro, good stuff.

Black Helicopter- Another single off of the album, this song deals with Goods more political side lyrically, but the sweet thing about him is he won't shove his view in your face. I find a lot of political songs turn me off due to I just really disagree with the "facts" people are trying to make me conform too, but this is different and thank god because this song is really good. Another folk-ish rock song, it is another easy gateway into enjoying this album, and the chorus just takes me for an audio joy ride every time. I love it.

The Boy Come Home- Another track based off of the acoustic guitar, this one doesnt do that much for me. I mean, its not a badly done song by any means, it just does not really click with me, I do like the bridge though.

The Devils In Your Details- This song sounds like it was written during the same session as "In A World Called Catastrophe", though I am a bigger fan of this one. One of the few tracks based off NOT the acoustic guitar, I must say I do love the lead guitars riff at the start of this song. This song reminds me of the Matthew Good band, and its nice to know that he hasn't left his roots completely.

Moon Over Marin- The IDEA of Matthew Good making an acoustic cover of a Dead Kennedys song does not sound very appealing, but this track is incredible. One thing about the Dead Kennedys is that they were very good lyricists (for the most part anyways) and Matt Good took these lyrics and formed a heart warming ballad around it. For me this is usually the first song I flip to on this album, I would probably suggest this one to a new listener above any other tracks.

The Girl Wedged Under The Front Of A Firebird- This song is only a minute and a half and pissed me off every time. It is a string of samples and then the a really fucking cool intro to a song, but then it just STOPS as oppose too turning into something truely good, which it very easily could have. God damnit it makes me mad.

I'm Not Safer Then A Bank- Really cool sounding song, but is under a minute long and starts and ends way to quickly. This song makes me mad in the same way the previous one does.

I'm A Window- From start to finish this is a damn good song. Its catchy as hell, more rocky and upbeat then the rest of the album and a very good pick up from the last two songs that COULD have been awesome but just decided to suck. Special mention to the bridge and the drum lead ups/ palm muted guitar when leading back into the last chorus. Its fucking awesome.

She's In It For The Money- Deffinitly my least favorite track across the album, it just seems like it was rushed to me, especially when it comes to the vocals. I guess its worth at least one full listen, I mean, I see how other people would love this one. But it just really didn't do anything for me.

Truth Love Will Find You In The End- A Daniel Johnston cover, this 2 minute long closer seems to be the perfect close to an album such as hospital music. This song almost sounds lazy, but its extremely relaxed vibe seems like Matthew Good just picked up a guitar and played this song and that was the end of the recording session for it. One acoustic track. One vocal track, and a very calm and soothing ending to an unbelievable album.

I am freakin excited for Vancouver to come out, might make something on that when it does. Enjoy.

Heavier Music

I think this is the last genre listing I'm going to do for a bit so that I can start on track by track full album reviews. I am pumped.

Alexis On Fire- Watch Out!!
This is the only Alexis On Fire record that I still love. It seemed to be the one in which Dallas Green's and George's vocals seem to collide in a mess of beauty and confusion. The math like guitar playing must be mentioned as well, for it seems to be one of the things that got them famous in the first place. Alexis On Fire did a lot to thrust this genre into the lime light, bringing a lot of good bands (and yet soo sooo many shitty ones) into the publics eye. They were a huge influence for the few years they were hugely popular, and I find this album solidifies their right to be given the voice they had.
Notable Tracks- Control, No Transitory and Happyiness By The Killowat.

At The Drive In- This Station Is Non-Operational
First off, this is a REALLY good title for a compilation album that was made after the bands break up, especially considering that it is a lyric from one of their most popular songs "One Armed Scissor" (Don't even get me started on how I believe Billy Talent ripped this song off, made it suck and got famous off of it. Fuck You "Try Honesty"). This album has a lot of energy, I'm a huge fan of the very wide range of tempos used across each song, the variety is very much something I can get used to in the post hardcore genre. The amount Cedric voice improved once he entered the Mars Volta is just astounding though.
Notable Tracks- One Armed Scissor, Metronome Arthritis and Fahrenheit.

Buried Inside- Chronoclast
This is just one wonderful concept album. Heavy as shit. Drummer is incredible. The vocals consist of only screaming, which I'm usually not a fan of. HERE is what makes this difference. The vocals are mixed into the tracks quieter then normal, almost as if it was just another guitar sound. This makes this album blend so much more then it did before. The frantic drumming matched with the melodic guitar just makes this an epic masterpiece. The fact that this band is loud, and they ARE very loud, and they don't depend on the fact that they are loud to be good makes me really happy. Too many people depend on writing loud music that they assume is good because it sounds good in their jam spaces, but this does not translate very well to record.
Notable Tracks- Every Song is written to blend into eachother, so as this album is just one giant track, I couldn't really choose any notable tracks.

Circa Survive- Juturna
My My My, I find this vocalist to be very very powerful. The heavily distorted background just seems to bring out his vocals that much more, as oppose to bury them which is standard with louder music. For me this album truely starts at track 2, Act Appalled. I think it gets off to a misleadingly weak starting with the first track, but the rest of the album is very very solid. Some nice guitar playing as well, but I usually focus on the vocals for this one.
Notable Tracks- Act Appalled, The Glorious Nosebleed and In Fear And Faith.

Coheed And Cambria- Burning Star IV Albums
Vol 1- Fear Through The Eyes Of Madness and Vol 2- No World For Tomorrow represent this band for me. I am not a fan at all of their albums prior to these two, and seeing as Vol 2 appears to be a sequel of Vol 1, I feel as if I can put them under the same listing (really i just can't decide which one is better). The moment this band decided to make an album that was a bit slower and a bit heavier was the moment they became embedded in my mind. Enjoy!
Notable Tracks- Vol 1- Welcome Home, Vol 2- No World For Tomorrow and Feather.

Deftones- White Pony
This is the Deftones at their prime. It is missing a couple essential tracks in their catalogue, but overall it is the one I find myself throwing on the most. Honourable mention to "Around The Fur" though, that album tends to rock shit too. Anyway, if there are any Deftones fans out there who don't have the full copy of this album, I just don't understand how you sleep at night. The Maynard Keenan guest vocals are a really nice treat as well.
Notable Tracks- Passenger, Digital Bath and Knife Party.

Horse The Band- The Mechanical Hand
This band constantly switches between being incredibly good to just hillarious, somehow without there ever being a moment inbetween. This is a very very fun record. I love the nintendo keyboards, they warm up my heart.
Notable Tracks- Manateen, The Black Hole and Octopus On Fire.

Isis- Panopticon
This album could have very easily landed in my post rock section, but for some reason it feels more at home here. Such good build ups and evolution of repitition throughout all the tracks. Vocals are only used WHEN they should be, which I love. I hate vocalists who sing all the time just because they can. This scarcity of vocals in this album make them just so much more effective when they are used.
Notable Tracks- In Fiction, So Did We and Altered Course.

The Mars Volta- Deloused In The Comatorium
This album has two sides too it. Half of it is some of the best and most complex song writing I have ever heard. Cedrics voice grew leaps and bounds since his days in At The Drive In and creates some of the most epicly written songs of all time (in my mind of course). Problem, the OTHER half of the album is experimental noise, which I am really really not a fan of. Randomn Noise has its place, and I don't believe that it is on this album. Still good though.
Notable Tracks- Cicatriz ESP, Televators and Drunkship Of Lanterns.
Honourable mention the their album that succeeded this one though, Frances The Mute. That shit is good.

Neurosis- A Sun That Never Sets
Let me just say that I don't have enough experience with this band to claim that this is by far my favourite record of theirs, but I do really enjoy it. They do include a lot more clean vocals on this record from what I have heard of their other stuff. How slow and heavy this album is makes it perfect if you have a long walk ahead of you, almost all the tempos are at walking speed and yet its so heavy it gives you the energy needed to do the trek. The album ends with what you think is your cd screwing up constantly and skipping, but its just built into the cd. I find that to be a damn cool concept.
Notable Tracks- From The Hill, Stones From The Sky and The Tide.

Opeth- Damnation
This is by no means at all a heavy album. The rest of Opeth's music is, this album is just a tangent into the realm of calmer music. I wouldn't feel right putting Opeth in any other section, and yet this album doesn't really fit here. Oh well, no matter, this album is just grand. You can hear a lot of middle influences in the guitar structure and song structure, and yet it is nowhere NEAR a metal album like the rest of their discography. Also, he has a really nice voice when he's not screaming (his scream is still pretty sick though).
Notable Tracks- Window Pane, Death Whispered A Lullaby and Hope Leaves.

A Perfect Circle- Thirteenth Step
While I like Tool much better, Maynard Keenans voice shines throughout this record like it never could in Tool. This band offers more of a solid rock sound then his other while still keeping their experimental roots. This band line up works damn well, too bad they released Emotive after.
Notable Tracks- The Noose, Blue and The Package.

Thursday- War All The Time
The energy released from this album gets me going every single time. Chances are you lump Thursday in with a million bands that they should not be associated with, but alas, they are deffinitly a worth while listen.
Notable Tracks- Marches And Manuevers, War All The Time and Division Street.

Tool- AEnima
I found this album to be released between the times that Tool was just an odd sounding rock band and to when they became more experimental, laying nestled between these two times in Tools career lies AEnima, a perfect blend of the two worlds that have created this band. Damn good musicianship all across the board on this one (especially the drummer), props to to the odd time signatures and time changes, it keeps me on my toes trying to tap along. I like it.
Notable Tracks- Eulogy, Stink Fist and Pushit.

Thats it for now

Post Rock

I have a feeling this one will not have too many entries, and most will be instrumental, but the ones I will list are all simply mind blowing.

Battle Of Mice-A Day Of Nights
Okay, I'm off to a bad start based on this album can so be argued that its not post rock, but for some reason I feel as if its earned its right to be on this list. Things to know about this album, it is suppose to be listened to from start to finish and the lyrics are suppose to be a story. Why is this important?, because they make the instrumentals progress in a story like format as well, which makes analyzing this album incredibly fun and most be returned to later on. Anyways, the story unfolds throughout the album in a blast of extremely progressive distorted guitars and yelling. Very powerful, although if one does not enjoy the vocals I can see them being turned off pretty quickly.
Notable Tracks- The Lamb and the Labrador, Sleep And Dream and Wrapped in Plain.

Do Make Say Think- You, Your History In Rust
Another addition from some of the members of the Broken Social Scene family tree. The amount of projects that are worth listening too that stem from the Broken Social Scene is just unbelievable. The ambience of this album is for sure worth mentioning and the general production and mixing would almost suck for any other album but fits this one unbelievably, especially when talking about the drums. On that note, this is a very drum driven record, and the just the general mixing goes to show that they meant it that way, due to the drums appear louder and more prominent then on most albums. MOST of this album is instrumental, but there are some parts with vocals which are done pretty nicely. The guitaring is deffinitly something to mention. It has the same feel as a Broken Social Scene record in the way that it just sounds like a giant party or a strange ambient mess, but it is deffinitly worth checking out. Some tracks can be a bit drawn out and take patience, but that just draws me in even more.
Notable Tracks- Bound To Be That Way, Executionar Blues and The Universe!

Explosions In The Sky- The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place
Explosions In The Sky is a pure instrumental band, a very good one at that. I think they got a lot of attention for doing the Friday Night Lights soundtrack, which was done very well. Anyways, someone once told me that this album was about being in a coma, and even though its instrumental I can deffinitly hear it. Throughout most of it the kick drum is almost playing a hearbeat, which is a very nice effect. I was always extremely impressed by the blending of guitar tones with this band, and the fact that they DON'T rely on distortion to climax their songs, something a lot of post rock and instrumental bands thrive on. Deffinitly an album that is was more enjoyable when listened to from start to finish, but if I must pick a few tracks, they would be these.
Notable Tracks- Your Hand In Mine, First Breath After Coma and Six Days At The Bottom Of The Ocean.

GodSpeed You Black Emporer- Slow Riot For A New Canada
This is probably one of the only albums I will refuse to pick favourite tracks off of. Why? Because there are only two songs, even though the album fills out half an hour. What can I say? This band knows epic, they know minimalism, they know how to write underneath qoutes and they know how to use it. God Speed can't really be explained, nor are they very accessable to new listeners due to the extremely long songs and the patience required to fully appreciate them, but this album is deffinitly a masterpiece. Also a note about this band is they did a significant amount of work on the 28 Days Later soundtrack, so if you enjoyed that check this album out.

Grails- The Burden Of Hope
What happens when a bunch of classically trained musicians meet up to form a post rock band? Usually its just a mess of everyone trying to brag about their abilities, but not in this case. A very key point about song writing in post rock (and all forms of music for that matter) is to only show off your skill when it SOUNDS GOOD. Whacky ass guitar solo don't mean shit if they are just THERE. You know, whenever a band is songwriting and they are like "oh yeah, I guess we should just throw in a solo or something there". That might be hard to play, but I find it to be pure fucking lazyness and can't stress enough how much it irks me. Anyways, this album pretty much sounds like the title, The Burden of Hope. Again an album that differianties in song writing styles and influences while still keeping a vibe that encompasses the whole album, this is something that I love to no end. Deffinitly something relaxing to go to sleep too or through in the backround while working on your computer or something, but still deserves a couple listens where you are giving it your full attention. I can not stress how perfect the between clean and distorted rough sounding guitars are for this album, they sure know how to set a gain level on their amp by golly.
Notable Tracks- The Burden Of Hope, In The Beggining and Canyon Hymn.

Mogwai- Happy Songs For Happy People
When discussing post rock, it is very VERY rare to not hear Mogwai brought up. They are revolutionists in this era and have been a very good starter band for many just getting into the genre. Instrumentally creating extremely melodic tunes while keeping the rock factor very very high, Happy Songs for Happy People brings out all the best in Mogwai's career for me. Why? Same reason I am in love with most albums, sure it lacks my single favourite Mogwai tune, but it also lacks a single moment that bores me and could be considered filler. This album never leaves me unsatisfied. Also, the occasional almost choir like vocals and the kick ass drum programming near the end of the album give some variety, something in which can stop a lot of full plays of post rock albums due to repitition of sounds.
Notable Tracks- Killing All The Flies, I Know You Are But What Am I? and Hunted By A Freak.

Mono- You Are There
Thank You Japan. Usually albums don't lead me to believe I have to thank an entire nation, but this is one of the two that leaves me thanking Japan (Nobuo Uematsu's "Tour De Japon" being the other) for its audio contributions into my cerebelum. I find myself thinking that the main guitarists main instrument is a piano, NOT because he doesn't play it fantasticly, but because his tempo changes and rythm patterns lead me to believe that his song writing skills originally developed on the piano. Is this a good thing for post-rock? Fuck Yes. Does this album deserve your full attention? Yes Sire it does. It may be the best post rock album I have come across. Can't think of anything that tops it, I just feel as if at one point I am going to have to correct myself because I do find something better. Anyways, the entire album sounds like it was written in classical style movements, as oppose to open style jamming that eventually leads to good sounding songs. Is THIS a good thing? Its very very hard to do this right, but Mono does it and earns my unyielding respect for it. Thank. You. Japan.
Notable Tracks- Are You There?, Moonlight and The Flames Beyond Cold Mountain.

Neurot Records
If Post Rock was discovered by pirates, they would have it in the heart of the underground to be later discovered and turned into the treasure chest of good music that almost defines this genre for me. Check it out.

Red Sparowes- Every Red Heart Shines Towards The Sun
I just flipped a coin to decide between this album and "At A Soundless Dawn", this one came out on top, but they are both almost equally good in soo soo many ways. Anywho, check "At A Soundless Dawn" out as well if this album gets you interested. This album is pretty much based off of their ability to write insanely powerfull build ups. Its just rises, climaxes, rinse and repeat. There are hundreds of post rock bands that use this as their sole formula, so why don't I mention them too?, because the Red Sparowes do it the best. Yes, all of their songs appear to go through the same cycle over and over again, but it just sounds soo good I can't help but be turned off by this lapse in song writing originality. Thats not to say all the songs themselves sound the same, it just happens that they follow the same guidelines in dynamics.
Notable Tracks- Like The Howling Glory Of The Darkest Winds, Annihalate The Sparrow and The Great Leap Foreword.

Sigur Ros- Agautis Byrjun
The first band I have mentioned that have nothing really english about them. Anytime I listen to this band I feel the urge to go to their homeland of Iceland. Why? Because they portray music in such a way that I can't help but feel they are exposed to a beauty I can't even begin to imagine. Some may be turned off by the falsetto vocals, but if you can get past that you are in for some of the most well written string and piano arrangements formed by a rock band ever. One huge key for me in string and piano string arrangements for rock bands is that they shouldn't be OVER top of the music, they should be written within the music. For instance, I hear a world of difference between a band that wrote and song and later on decide strings might be cool then a band who writes their songs with string arrangements in mind, giving a way more natural feel between transitions and general movement throughout the album. Sigur Ros is a VERY good example of how powerful unique string arrangements can be, as oppose to just violins holding the note the guitar does because its "deep" (I am guilty of doing that way WAY WAY too often, someday I shall kick that habit.) Anyways, check this album, its almost indescribable.
Notable Tracks- Staralfur, Svefn-g-englar and Olsen Olsen.

A Silver Mt Zion- Horses In The Sky
Post rock band? No doubt. Is this a post rock album? It could be debated, and it will probably be hated by a lot of people, but the ones who hear what I hear in this will be drawn in for months of living it on repeat. There is just soo much to discover about this album. The lyrical content is really key, although once again some will be turned away from his voice. A lot of the songs will change 100% from the start of the song, containing no similarities to the intro making these songs appear as if they should have been on split up tracks. While just for a listen this would be useful, but if one was paying attention to the full lyrical content splitting up the tracks would have a negative reaction (even if they are back to back it does not have the same effect). Anyways, kudos to french Canadian musicians bringing us this, along with none other then Godspeed.
Notable Tracks- Ring Them Bells (Freedom Has Come And Gone), Horses In The Sky and Mountains Made Of Steam.

This Will Destroy You- Self Titled
While most post rock aim to rock you to death, I believe this one is very content just relaxing me into a coma. The perfect amount of repetition and minimalistic efforts cause this to be one damn sleep album. I don't mean this in a bad way, it is really really good, I just would suggest listening to it in a calm setting.
Notable Tracks- Three Legged Workhorse, Threads and Burial On The Presidio Banks.

I feel as if my post rock collection needs to be greatly expanded. Hopefully more to come soon.

Soon

Yeah, so within the next two or three days I'm going to cover Post rock and some heavier stuff, and then get to the real reviews.
Also, I am looking for a way to post my music on my blog, hopefully I will come across a way for that soon.

anyways, if any people follow/ read this, a huge reason I write this is hopefully some people will get me into some new music. Soo comment away!

Indie/ Alternative Rock

Alright, now this is a hard one to tackle.
I think within the next two days or so, after I'm done doing a brief overview I will make a list of everything I have done so that it is extremely easy to navigate, and then I shall do some editing and what not. It will be good.

The Arcade Fire- Funerals
The only negative thing I have to say about this album is that its at the start of the alphabet, and its going to be really hard to find something else this good to put on this list. Many would argue that Neon Bible should be here in place of Funerals, and I might agree with that if I had discovered them in a different order. But with how truely unique sounding this band is, its really hard to forget the first time you become submersed into one of their records.
Notable Tracks- Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels), Rebellion (lies) and In The Back Seat.

Athlete- Beyond the Neighborhood
A very very solid alternative rock album. Good voice, good song structure and excellent use of synths. This album is nothing too epicly special, but it still deserves a mention.
Notable Tracks- Tokyo, The Outsiders and Second Hand Stores.

Band Of Horses- Cease To Begin
I really really like the guitar harmonies across this album, its nothing too special, but it was really nice to here the radio blasting something that appeared to take some musician ship and some innovation in song writing. His vocal range is nice though, I'm not to much of a fan of lyrics that almost appear recycled, but thats just my opinion on that matter.
Notable Tracks- No One's Gonna Love You, Detlef Schrempf and Is There A Ghost?

Bloc Party- Silent Alarm
There are so many things one could mention about this album, one thing I will mention, is how the rest of the Bloc Party's albums disappointed me. This one seems to have had so much effort and soul put into it, while the others just seem to be written in a rush to profit off the success of this one. I guess I can see WHY they would want to do that, it just made the band go in a direction I was not happy with. But this album, once again, start to finish, fucking spectacular. There is so much energy and yet they don't rely on the pure energy to push past sub par guitar lines and vocals, they keep it all up to an extremely acceptable level. Its damn good.
Notable Tracks- Like Eating Glass, Helicopter and This Modern Love.

Blonde Redhead- 23
So Blonde Redheads career has to be one of the weirdest careers I have ever heard of, and thats only for one reason. Every single album they release is way better then the last, this is so unheard of. I mean, if they only had two or three albums it might work, BUT throughout all seven of their albums I can count what order I like them chronogicly. I really like this, because it just makes me that much more excited for their new record. Anyways, back to 23, it is there 7th full length album, and there is absolutely no filler anymore. From start to finish it is such a solid experimental rock that it still surprises me with the places it goes.
Notable Tracks- 23, Dr Strangeluv and The Dress.
Honorable mentions to their previous album, Misery Is A Butterfly, that one is pretty solid as well.

Bonnie "Prince" Billy- I see a darkness
While most of this guys career is a mystery to me, and all of his other CDs I have checked out havent done that much for me, this one is stands out on my playlist as a very very unique sounding album that is deffinitly on the darker side of moods. It has this really strange depressing feel, maybe its something in his very spacey almost non sensical instrumentals, or his very soft spoken timid voice. I don't know, I can say that this is an album that needs to be heard.
Notable Tracks- I See A Darkness, Death To Everyone and Madaleine-Mary.

Broken Social Scene- You Forgot It In People
Now this is a summertime feel good album, but that does not mean that there is not a lot of in depth effort put into it, its just that all of that effort appears to be a party on record. The key to the Broken Social Scene is that they have soo many members they almost appear to be having a party on stage, but what they do know how to do is only use certain members and instruments when they are needed, as oppose to just throwing them in because they are there. This is really important factor that makes this really worth listening too.
Notable Tracks- KC Accidental, Almost Crimes and Pacific Theme
On that note, the acoustic version of Almost Crimes is just bonkers, check it out. I believe its on an Arts and Crafts label sampler.

Built To Spill- You In Reverse.
Wow. This is such an important album in my collection that I can't stress it enough, one problem I have with it though is that I have no love at all for the first song. Well thats okay with me, due to the rest of the album is just so perfect it makes up for it. I would suggest buying this album, skipping to track 2 and giving it a listen. One thing you need to know about Built to Spill, is that the entire band is centralized around the main singer/ songwriter and the rest of the band are different session musicians hired for each album. This leads to every album sounding incredibly different, so do not be turned away from You In Reverse if you had bad experiences with Built to Spill before, for example, I can't stand to listen to any of there other albums. But for some reason this one holds a place for me.
Notable Tracks- Traces, Liar, and Gone.

Bush- Fucking Up
Another live album yes, but this album is the perfect description of Bush. It has songs that span from the start to the end of their career, they DO make mistakes on it because they are just a 4 piece rock band. At the end of the grunge era when Bush starting coming up, people called them Nirvana rip offs and them were blown out of porportion by a couple singles, but alas, they are a very VERY solid rock band. This album shows that. None of the over production and studio marketing gimicks they had through out their career, just a solid rock band playing a couple of their songs.
Notable Tracks- Warm Machine, Machine Head, and Greedy Fly.

The Cure- Trilogy
This is going to be the first album to get a major review. There is no way I can some it up in a couple paragraphs. I will make this review soon.

Desaparecidos- Read Music/ Speak Spanish
A sort of pop punkish effort from Bright Eyes front man Connor Oberst. The lyrics all seem to have to do with middle class living. While not near as deep as Bright Eyes albums, this one is still a fun listen. It has a very poppy vibe and make good summertime background music.
Notable Tracks- Man and Wife, The Latter (Damaged Goods), Survival Of The Fittest and Man And Wife, The Former (financial planning)

Devotchka- How It Ends
An extremely good multi instrumental band. While the album does have a lot of down notes, the songs that are good are just unbelievable. It is very hit or miss, but when his voice lines up in perfect sync to the crazyness of the experimental instrumentals it is a very very powerful thing to experience. I would suggest checking out a few tracks.
Notable Tracks- How It Ends, Dearly Departed and You Love Me.

Fleet Foxes- Ragged Wood
Holy. Fucking. Vocal. Harmonies. No idea how any of these songs even began to come into being, but I guess they did it, seeing as I'm listening to it right now. First discovered this band on Conan 'Obrien, and did they ever catch my attention. I love hearing of a band near the start of their career, now I can follow them. Anyways, this is more of a folk rock album I guess, filled with a lot of vocal harmonies and mad song writing skillz in general. Go forth and listen.
Notable Tracks- He Doesn't Know Why, Heard Them Stirring and Your Protector.

Foo Fighters- The Colour and Shape
This album is just classic, I guess it was just on a lot for a lot of important times in my life, I don't know why, but I can't help by smile everytime I hear it through.
Notable Tracks- My Hero, Everlong and Hey Johnny Park!

Kings Of Leon- Only By The Night
Well I can't claim I have even gave a listen to their other records, and certainly can not say "I liked them BEFORE they were cool", I can say that this is a solid rock album. At first I liked the single off this album (Sex On Fire) but I assumed that it was just another band that has a good single and then the rest of the album is sub par, but someone threw on this cd at a party or something and I have to admit that it is damn good. Its really catchy throughout its entirety, and has solid vocals and instrumentals that seem to blend together really well.
Notable Tracks- Sex On Fire, Manhattan and Closer.

Manchester Orchestra- I'm Like A Virgin Losing A Child
This is probably one of the catchiest records I love that trade catchy-ness for quality. While I was not impressed with their next album, Means Everything To Nothing, this is an album I will keep coming back too. From start to finish its non stop catchy brilliance.
Notable Tracks- Where Have You Been?, Wolves At Night and I Can Barely Breath.

Matthew Good Band- Beautiful Midnight
I guess Matt Good is going to be the first person I mention for two separate records, thats probably because he knows how to make records. K-I-C-K A-S-S, thats the way we spell success. The opening cheerleaders chanting at the start of this album explain it all. Chances are years ago you have heard a good portion of this album playing on the radio, I suggest revisiting it.
Notable Tracks- I Miss New Wave, Hello Time Bomb and Load Me Up.

Modest Mouse- The Moon And Antartica
There are more music critic arguements about what the best Modest Mouse albums on the net then stars in the sky.... well this is my favourite, so take that internet. I believe it combines every good element about Modest Mouse and wraps it up in a well produced beautiful package. The main problem is that when I stop listening to this album it refuses to leave my mind for days, but I guess it gives me something to think about while I'm at work so I can't complain that much. Its damn catchy, I guess its up there in catchativity as the Manchester Orchestra's- I'm Like A Virgin Losing A Child. Check it out.
Notable Tracks- Gravity Rides Everything, 3rd Planet and Paper Thing Walls.

Muse- Absolution
This album is almost TOO epic at parts, and I usually like my epic meter cranked too 11. But alas, the multi intrumentals, the powerful voice and the weaving of the two together create a music that some may claim is pretensious, I just think it sounds brilliant. Nothing too much I can say about this album that your radio didn't tell you a couple years back.
Notable Tracks- Stockholme Syndrome, Time Is Running Out and Hysteria.

The National- Boxer
This album sounds like it was written specificly for montage moment on the O.C., and now that I am looking it up apparently the first track, "Fake Empire" was on several T.V. shows, such as one tree hill. This is one of those albums that regardless of tempo changes or intrument changes, it creates a solid never changing atmosphere that makes a full play through totally worth it. For some reason this album sounds better when its night time, I have no idea why.
Notable Tracks- Fake Empire, Green Thumb and Mistaken For Strangers.

Neverending White Lights- Act 1:Goodbye Friends Of The Heavenly Bodies.
Sooooo I don't know how to describe this one. Fucking incredible, the second one might be better, I haven't decided, but I have been attatched to this album for so many years that it will make the cut. Insanely talented multi intrumentalist and producer Daneil Victor creates a brilliant array of instrumentals, sings on a couple, and then does what most singers refuse to do.... admit there are a lot of people out there who could sing his songs better. And its not that he has a bad voice, he actually has an incredible voice, I guess he just decided that others could fit his music better. A very extensive list of perfectly selected guest vocals that I dont even know where to begin talking about it, its really an essential album.
Notable Tracks- The Grace (Dallas Green), From What I Once Was and Angels And Saints.

A Northern Chorus- Bitter Hands Resign
This is probably the most under-rated band I know of. Signed to Sonic Unyon in Hamilton, Ontario, this band blended unique a beautiful melodies and rythms across 4 masterpiece albums, and yet never seemed to achieve that large of a fan base. For example, they played their final show at a bar with a capacity of 350 people. Anyways, back to the album. Something magical was going on A Northern Chorus entered the studio to record this album. Every moment is so clear and concise as far as production goes, which I find is a huge problem in most bands that don't appear to have major label support in their recordings. The sound of every vocal line, guitar sound, bass sound and drums seemed to be handpicked to fit the vibe of every moment. This masterpiece of an album should be known to everyone. Go out and get it.
Notable Tracks- The Shepherd And The Chauffeur, This Open Heart and Winterize.

Offspring- Smash
Just classic.
Notable Tracks- Smash, Killboy Powerhead and Self Esteem.

People For Audio- The New Ancients
Man, this band is underated to the point that WIKIPEDIA doesn't even have a slight blurb about them. The fact that not more people know about how talented these guys are is saddening. I can't even begin to describe the ambience of their live shows, but it is deffinitly something that needs to be seen to understand.
Notable Tracks- Black Memory White Whale, Captain, and From City To Country.

Pixies- Death To The Pixies
A double disc album, first one is a "best of" and the second disc is live, it covers everything was good about their career. The pure energy and insanity style of music the Pixies laid out is legandary and has left its influences to so many well known artists that I don't know where to begin with talking about them. They are deffinitly worth getting into. Apparently this album went out of print back in 2004 and was replaced in the catalogue by Wave Of Mutilation, but i prefer this one. I was lucky enough to find a copy in a garage sale, but its probably spread across the internet. The combination of Punk and Surf Rock that is very evidently spread across this album can't help but make one smile, and then feel extreme angst all at the same time. Gorgeous.
Notable tracks- Where is my Mind?, Gauge Away, Hey and Here Comes Your Man
yeah, I couldnt pick only three.

Placebo- Meds
Ahhh Placebo, what a unique sound and band. Either you find his voice god awful or you can't get enough, there is not much room inbetween room with this band. Meds may NOT have the single best Placebo songs there is to offer, but it is the album that from start to finish is the most consistantly well done. I don't believe there is a track on this album I skip over if I have time to listen through the full thing. I believe this album is the very essence of the Post Punk Revival that has been plunging through the underground since around '99. This is good stuff.
Notable Tracks- Meds, Post Blue and A Song To Say Goodbye.

Queens Of The Stone Age- Songs For The Deaf
One of the greatest rock albums ever. I can't describe it without going on for pages, so I will do that later.
Notable Tracks- No One Knows, Go With The Flow and Hangin' Tree

The Racontuers
I am such a huge fan of Jack White but couldn't get into this band. I will say this though, the vocal pattern in the verses of Broken Boy Soldiers is probably my favourite vocals Jack White has done.

Raising The Fawn- The North Sea
Anouther extremely underated band signed to Sonic Unyon, John Crossingham (of the the Broken Social Scene) fronts this unstoppable rock trio (well, unstoppable until they broke up). The pure power they on stage I witnessed years ago is still something I still brag about until this day.
Notable Tracks- The North Sea, Gwendolyn and The News.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers- Californiacation
We have all heard it. Its fucking classic.
Notable Tracks- Otherside, Californiacation and Scar Tissue

Silverchair- Diorama
This album has some the best orchestral and vocal work done to it, not to mention thats is production quality is borederline obsurd. The entire musical direction of this album changes from song to song proving that Daneil Johns can almost write anything he feels like. If I could props all of Austraillia for creating this wonderboy, I would.
Notable Tracks- Across The Night, One Way Mule and Tuna In The Brine.

Silversun Pickups- Carnavas
Yes, the lead singer is a male and yes he does rock your face off while sounding quite feminine on occasion. This album sounds like garage rock fucked pure talent and creativity and gave birth to a very talented team of engineers to take care of its parents. A lot of the songs were staples on the radio for a while, but I highly suggest getting indepth and intimate with the full length of this album.

Songs Ohia- The Lioness
Simply stunning. I am not that big of a fan of most other Songs Ohia work, but The Lioness has a bleeding honest throughout it that is impossible to miss.
Notable Tracks- The Lioness, Coxcomb Red and Black Crow.

Sonic Youth- Rather Ripped
How my favourite Sonic Youth album came out to be there 15th full length studio album is beyond me, but I find this cd to be the high point of their carrier. It takes everything I have ever loved about Sonic Youth, improves upon it, throws it on this record and does away with a lot of the filler that appeared on previous albums. Deffinitly the best guitar work by far done by this band, every song is more drawn out that Sonic Youth fans are use to, but an album this epic could not have fit into short songs.
Notable Tracks- Pink Steam, Incinarate and James Run Free.

The Stars- Set Yourself On Fire
This a truely well balanced album. Instrumentally, vocally, and song writing wise. The Stars have a very unique sound, and this has to be my favourite records of theirs. There constant switching between male and female vocalist, along with real instruments and software instruments truely blends this into a complexly wonderful listen. Check it out.
Notable Tracks- One More Night, The Big Fight and Sleep Tonight.

The Strokes- Is This It?
Such a fun record. The title track blows my mind every single time. This is one of those albums that transforms what it appears to be about depending on what your doing. I believe the reason is that the music just seems so relevant too me. This album can brighten your day and bring you down at the same time. Incredible.
Notable Tracks- Is This It?, Someday and Last Night.

Sufjan Stevens- Illinois
Man, this man knows how to pack a lot of different sounds and styles into an album without overdoing it, and there is a very fine line between those too things. Inside that line, you will find Sufjan Stevens Illinois. Stevens has stated that he wishes to write an album about every single American State, and while he has only completed two to date, the other one being Michigan, you just know that if he goes ahead with this project it will be a simply stunning musical collective. The amount of layers heard across this album makes it one that is almost more enjoyable everytime you rediscover it.
Notable Tracks- Chicago, John Wayne Gacy and Concerning The UFO Sightings In The Highlands.

The Tea Party- Tangents
Probably my favourite name for a greatest hits album ever. Tangents. Thats all a greatest hits album really is, the central songs that made up a bands career and where they broke off from there. Well put Mr. Title Writer. Anyways, everyone has heard the Tea Party, I find them to have a very very powerful style, but a lot of the time I seem to think they experiment a bit too much where they could just be rocking my life.
Notable Tracks- Walking Wounded, Psychopomp and Heavens Coming Down.

Tokyo Police Club- Lessons In Crime
Its like they took all the party aspects of The Strokes and turned up the energy. This album only is only around 17 minutes long, but from start to finish it is none stop energy. This album makes me bounce off walls.
Notable Tracks- Cheer It On, Nature Of Experiment and Shoulders And Arms.

Vampire Weekend- Self Titled
Another record that is just all about fun. I like simple fast drums and violin, it makes for damn catchy times.
Notable Tracks- M79, A-Punk and I Stand Corrected.

The White Stripes- White Blood Cells
The White Stripes deserve every bit of success they got and more. Somehow even though they have recieved an extreme amount of popularity this band stayed to their roots of just writing the albums that they felt like. White Blood Cells started off their climb into the mainstream with Fell In Love With A Girl, although there status in the mainstream was secured when Seven Nation Army came out. Anyways, this album is a very very solid listen.
Notable Tracks- Hotel Yorba, Fell In Love With A Girl and I Can't Wait.

Wintersleep- Welcome To The Night Sky
This is deffinitly up there on my favourite albums of this list. For some reason his voice just breaks my heart, its anouther one of those albums that just sounds brutally honest. Such a good album, could not say it enough.
Notable Tracks- Dead Letter, Search Party and Murderer.

Acoustic Jams

I believe I am going to slow it down a bit right now, put down some acoustic albums that through and through blow my mind.
Here is the thing with acoustic music- there are SOO SOO many acoustic artists out there and way too much of it is crap, their is also soo soo many bands with insanely good acoustic tracks but they only have one or two on that album.
Say you want an album that is start to finish well done acoustic music, where do you start?
I am hopefully going to be of some help. Once again I am only going to list one album per artists, but if I believe they have other essential albums, I will deffinitly mention them.
Here goes.

The Acorn- Glory Hope Mountain
Now this a band I am pretty excited to write about. Why? Because they are local to my city, and now they are starting to get big. I first got turned onto them when I saw the Soft Disaster open for Raising the Faun (Those bands will get mentioned later, don't you worry) and heard the guitarist was starting up another project. Saw them live and knew they had to go somewhere, and so far they appear to be doing pretty well for themselves, so hopefully you guys will check them out and support some musicians from my area.
Notable Tracks- Hold Your Breath, Oh Napoleon, and Lullaby (mountain)

Alice In Chains- MTV Unplugged
This album ruined Alice In Chains for me. Why? Because after hearing the perfection that is this album it is so hard to go back to listening to their louder stuff. Hats off to the production stuff, one of the greatest sound live albums I have ever come across. There is not a single error across this album, and every member edited the sound of their instruments/ what they do to turn it into an acoustic bliss of beautiful instrumentals. What really needs to be talked about though are the vocal harmonies done between Jerry Cantrell (the guitarist) and Layne Staley. I dont know how they do it, but their two voices blended together are far greater then any of the vocal dubbing done across any other Alice In Chains record.
Notable Tracks- Nutshell, Down in a Hole and Over Now.

Beck- Sea Change
What can one say about Beck? He crosses genres so damn often you can't really label him in anyway, but you CAN label his albums, and he has through and through mastered the art of writing a folkish acoustic art. He changed his lyrical and singing style to fit perfectly with the acoustic blend of music he is now trying to create and he does it damn well. If you have never been a fan of Beck before, this is deffinitly an album worth checking out.
Notable Tracks- Lost Cause, Golden Age and All In Your Mind.

Beth Gibbons and Rustin Man- Out Of Season
Okay, only parts of this album are truely acoustic songs, BUT the album from start to finish still has the same relaxed vibe as an acoustic album would, so I'm throwing it up here anyways. Beth Gibbons brings her beautiful voice down a bit from her Trip Hop band (portishead) to match a more standard style record, and it really really works. A lot of Portishead fans may of been disappointed by the lack of extreme experimentation on a Beth Gibbons solo album, but if you are not expecting it to sound like Portishead, then your set for a very enjoyable listen.
Notable Tracks- Sand River, Show, and Funny Time Of Year.

Blind Pilot- 3 Rounds and A Sound
This album sounded like it was written by a couple of friends on backporches, around campfires and at times that just seemed so important and incredible at the time. Its another one of those albums that just makes you think of old times with friends, and this time it CANT be because I have it connected to memories due to I discovered this album only two weeks ago. Some of the tracks near the middle dip down a bit in quality, but over all this album is really worth a listen too.
Notable Songs- The Bitter End, 3 Rounds a and a Sound, and Oviedo.

Bon Iver- For Emma, Forever Ago
Every single review of this album tells the story of how it came into conception so I dont feel as if I need to put it on the internet for the ninety millionth time. You know what makes knowing the story of this album way cooler though? Not learning it until you have heard the album a couple times through, so if you haven't read the story yet, don't until you have gotten into it. I promise it will reveal things about the album you didn't understand before. This whole cd is just a man and his guitar with a rare couple of overdubs, and thats what makes it one of the most honest acoustic records out there. Check it for sure.
Notable Tracks- Flume, re: Stacks, and For Emma.

Bright Eyes- I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning.
One of my favourite albums of all time. For sure my favourite lyrical attempt of all time in my opinion. Every single thing this man says just seems to have so much relevance to every single part of your life and its all wielded over simple chords and light vocal melodies. It needs to be heard. Enjoy.
Notable Tracks- First Day Of My Life, Poison Oak, and We are Nowhere And Its Now.

City and Colour- Bring Me Your Love
The second acoustic solo attempt from Alexisonfires Dallas Green. His first solo attempt, "Sometimes", felt as if he was searching for a sound to call his own. This album is where he found it. I believe that it is improved in every possible way in comparison to his first attempt, and it is deffinitly more accessable then his first record. Anyways, if you enjoy Dallas Greens work, this is one of the most essential things one can own.
Notable Tracks- Waiting, What Makes A Man, and The Girl.

The Cranberries- MTV Acoustic
I promise not to put down every MTV acoustic album that has come out. Pretty much another one that was done damn well. A lot of bands do acoustic versions of their songs and all they do is play their songs, but quieter, but the Cranberries rearrange a lot of the instrumentals so it fits perfectly with the new sound of the songs. Anyways, its good.
Notable Tracks- Dreaming my Dreams, Linger and Zombie.

Damien Rice- O
Another album that just leaves me speechless everytime I hear it. His voice was made for the acoustic guitar. No wait fuck that. The acoustic guitar was created for his voice, thats how god damn well it works. And he does not use that as an excuse to through off poppy hooks and overdone lyrics, although he could and sell like mad, he still writes original sounding material that is just breath taking.
Notable Tracks- Volcano, Cheers Darlin' and Cannon Ball.

Death Cab For Cutie- Plans
Those goes under acoustic in the same way Beth Gibbons did. Its not REALLY an acoustic record, but the entire album blends in with its few acoustic songs that it may as well have been. This is another one of those records that I have been coming back to for years, truely marking it in my catologue as one that will stay.
Notable Tracks- I Will Follow You Into The Dark, Marching Bands Of Manhattan and Soul Meets Body.

Elliot Smith- Either/Or
I have to say, I am not the hugest Elliot Smith fan (did i just offend the entire internet at once?) but this is a stand out album for me. Start to finish it has a sort of melancoly optimism to it that is seldom heard. Its one also one of the few records out there that sounds like Elliot Smith wrote this album for himself and no one else. Its worth checking out.
Notable Tracks- Between The Bars, Alameda and Angeles.
I would also listen to Twilight and The Biggest Lie by Elliot Smith, off of different albums, but still soo soo soo good.

Feist- Let it Die
Everyone has heard a lot about Feist and then forgot about her by now (she DID have a song on an ipod commercial), but this album was far more then just a couple singles and a terrific voice. Its a fucking fantastic voice across tonnes of great music, not to mention she is in The Broken Social Scene, which will deffinitly be touched upon later.
Notable Tracks- Let It Die, Gate Keeper and Mushaboom.

Matthew Good- Hospital Music
Once again, this COULD be argued that it is not an acoustic album, but I like to believe that it is. Truely a work of art, Matthew Good has managed to stay on top of things to release mind fuck after mind fuck of brilliant albums across his long career and his newest solo attempt is no different. I almost feel like a jerk only giving a couple lines to this album, but alas, I have a lot of general writing to do tonight if I want to start doing real reviews, which this album will for sure get one. I can't get enough of it, check it out, you can't go wrong.
Notable Tracks- Moon Over Marin, Champions of Nothing and Black Helicopter

Great Lake Swimmers- Bodies and Minds
Really really down tempo acoustic folkish music, backed by eerie sounding instruments, the vocals guide you through some really well dynamics in respect to the melodies through the full album. This whole album has a general vibe to it that will suck you in and drag you into the music.
Notable Tracks- Songs For The Angels, Bodies And Minds, and I Could Be Nothing.

Iron and Wine- In The Reins
I find this to be Iron and Wine's greatest effort to date. My main problem with other Iron and Wine albums is that there are too many places where the album drops in quality a lot, so it becomes hard to want to listen to it from start to finish. In the Reins is different, every song appeared to have the care paid attention to it that should have been, and it shows for sure.
Notable Tracks -He Lays In The Reins (live bonus version if you have it), Sixteen, Maybe Less and Dead Man's Will.

Jose Gonzalez- Veneer
His guitar playing is just unreal, and the best part about it, is he makes it WORK. Its not very complicated playing, but you can tell that there are no filler notes just to carry on the tempo. Every single note is carefully searched for and found in a blend of perfect melodies. His voice is better live, I don't know why it lags a bit here, but whatever, its still just so good.
Notable tracks- Heartbeats, Crosses and Hints

Kings Of Convenience- Quiet Is The New Loud
This duo sounds like a new age Simon and Garfunkle if Simon and Garfunkle kept with the little bit of awesome they had and turned down the suck ultimately. Point being? This is some of the most well done acoustic guitar playing you will hear. Their song writting abilities are almost unheard of and leaves for a masterpieces of an album. For some reason the term "delicate" pops into my head everytime I think of them, so take what you will from that.
Notable Tracks- Winning A Battle Losing A Way, I Don't Know What I Can Save You From and Parrellel Lines.
Also check out the track Carman Islands, although it is on their other album.

Mark Lanegan- Felid Songs
I am new to Mark Lanegan, but from what I have heard over this album he is totally someone I will be getting way more familiar with. His deep southern sounding voices is so powerful over the soulfull sounding songs that you can't help but believe he is almost hurting in every word that he speaks. For people looking for a bit more energy but still the depressing vibe that comes along with most acoustic music, this one is for you.
Notable Tracks- One Way Street, Don't Forget Me and Love

My Morning Jacket- At Dawn
Now I'm really straying from the acoustic music label, but this album just has that feel of acoustic album again. I don't know what it is, but for some reason in my mind I associate it with a lot of the other albums I have listed, so I feel as if its place is with them. Another southern sounding voice, I find them to just seem to sound way more honest then other acoustic musicians, although I have absolutely no reason to back that up. I am from so far not south, so I don't even have ties to the land.... I guess it just does something for me, music is tricky that way. Anyways, this shit is just incredible.
Notable Tracks- Xmas Curtain, At Dawn and Lowdown.

Neil Young- Live at Massey Hall, 1971
Neil Young alone with an acoustic guitar and piano. No one could say it better then that.
Notable Tracks- Tell Me Why, Old Man and The Needle And The Damage Done.

Nick Drake- Fives Leaves Left
This album is legendary. Nick Drakes debut onto the music scene, and although during his lifetime he never got big at all, Nick Drake has been cited as a main inspiration to too many artists to count. This album is hauntingly beautiful, from the oddly tuned guitar, to the low voice and lyrical content to all of the string arrangements written for it, it stands forth as a truely timeless album.
Notable Tracks- Day Is Done, River Man, and Three Hours
Also there must be an honorable mention of his second album, Bryter Layer. Its also a masterpiece.

Phil Ochs- Farewells and Fantasies
This man is such a legend that I dont need to say anything about him. If you haven't heard about him or haven't got into him, this is a good collection of his work that may lead you to other albums of his.
Notable Tracks- Changes, When I'm Gone and Song of My Returning.

Steven Von Till- If I Should Fall To The Field
Only started listening to this man about two days ago, but I feel as if I have left this album on repeat for so long that I know every nook and cranny (and theres a lot of them).
So alright, first we can mention that Steve Von Till is in Neurosis for all of you heavier music fans, but this is still a worth while acoustic type album. His guitar playing makes me envious everytime I here it.
Notable Tracks- Breath, Running Dry, and To The Field.

Well, it looks like that is it for an acoustic list, although there are some bands in here that should not have been, and there are probably some bands who I should have put in here but will end up in a different section. Oh well, after I'm done doing a slight review of all the music I think is worth while on my Playlist and start doing real reviews I will find an easier way to find the artist you like.

Alright...... what should I tackle next?

Electronic.......sort of?

Another list, another genre. This is going to be a long day. I hope I get through writing and doing extremely quick reviews that sort of span across the best of music on my playlist, and everything that deserves a lot more attention (and there is a lot of it, I'm about to write a quick one paragraph summary of The Album Leafs- In A Safe Place, I don't even know if words could describe that album, let alone one paragraph. I'll be coming back to that one later.)
But alas, hopefully some people will notice some stuff they like on these lists and be inclined to check out some others.
Here goes with this one.

The Album Leaf- In A Safe Place
This album is hauntingly beautiful, ambient and yet not to slow paced, some points are just epic but at the same time so relaxing, the general sound of it is almost unmatched in my mind.
Every track on this album is essential, it just keeps perpetuating itself into a beautiful array of magic. If I was forced to pick and choose essential tracks, they would go as follows.
Notable Tracks- Eastern Glow, The Outer Banks, and Moss Mountain Town.

The Big Gigantic- Fire It Up
This is through and through just an epic party album. BUT, it is epic, and fucking ill too bounce along too. Not really much I can say about it that you won't instantly discover for yourself.
Notable Tracks- Funhouse, Stand Up, Treasure Chest.

Bjork- Homogenic
My favorite one of her efforts by far, I don't even believe any of her other albums grave the brilliance off of this one. Bjork concentrates more on strings and real instruments on this album, while keeping true to her insanely programmed drums, pop like vocal patterns and borderline obscure melodies to form the masterpiece that is Homogenic. Once again I would suggest a listen from start to finish, but if I had to pick out tracks, they would be these.
Notable Tracks- Joga, Bacholerette, and All Is Full Of Love.

Blockhead- Downtown Science
Wrote about it in hip hop section. Check it if interested.

Boards Of Canada- The Campfire Headphase
While deffinitly experimental at most stages of the album and needs to be listened to in full to actually understand what they are trying to do, there are still enough stand alone tracks that would make one WANT to understand what this album is all about. It pretty much says it in the title, The Campfire Headphase, of where this album is most suited for. This album has an urban feel that is actually better suited for away from cities and camping. If your looking for an electronic album to go camping with, this is essential.
Notable Tracks- Chromakey Dreamcoat, Satellite Anthem Icarus, and Oscar Sees Through Red Eye.

Delerium- Karma
This album takes PATIENCE, but it is just so worth it. For instance, Enchanted, the first track on the album, takes a good 2 and a half minutes to start, but once it does you can relax into a weave of beautifully placed instrumentals and the lovely voice of Kristy Thirsk. Speaking of her, a lot of pretty popular female vocalists appear across this album, Kristy Thirsk and Sarah McLachlan are the most notable. It seems as if singers like these would be a strange fit, but the only thing about it is that they fit so perfectly. Also, the production value of this album is just incredible. Hats off to the engineer who pulled this one off.
Notable Tracks- Silence, Enchanted, and Euphoria (firefly)

Emancipator- Soon It Will Be Cold Enough
Best. Drum. Programmer. Ever.
I have no idea how he does it, the time and effort put into this album bleeds from almost every single moment spanning from start to finish. This may possibly be my favourite electronic album of all time, the only reason I say may, is because I truely mean of all time. I don't know if I will ever come across something as well done as this album. This album never onces lapses in brilliance, originality or simple greatness. Get off your ass and go buy it.
Notable Tracks- First Snow, Maps and Good Knight.

I'll just give a notable mention right now to mash up artists Girl Talk.
His music is fun, check it.

Gorrilaz- Demon Days
I bought this album years and years ago on a whim of I kind of liked the single and felt like new music. Those are the types of albums I usually try and convince myself are good and then just forget about them two weeks later. Not this one. As a musical collective project, the Gorrilaz tend to change extremely between albums. If you heard Gorrilaz you hated, it may not be represented here. If you heard from of their tracks you liked, it may also not be represented here. With danger mouse at the helm of the production staff on this album, he produced something that has truely stuck with me for these last few years.
Notable Tracks- El manana, Last Living Souls and Feel Good Inc.

I'll give mention now too to Her Space Holiday, this band is just SOOO SOO hit and miss. Somes unbelievable, some is just thrown together mush, I dont know where to start. Check it out if your interested though.

Mates Of State- Team Boo
Two people pretty much playing poppy keyboard songs and singing love songs back and forth. Its pretty cute and worth checking out I guess, deffinitly not the best on the list though. Its also probably under the wrong genre, but thats a whole new story.
Notable Tracks- Ha Ha, The Kissaway, and Parachutes

MGMT- Oracular Spectacular
Once again, probably in the wrong section. Extremely well done pop songs, extremely enjoyable feel good album, although chances are you are sick of them already.
Notable Tracks- Time To Pretend, Kids and Electric Feel.

Nine Inch Nails- All That Could Have Been
We have all heard way too much about this band, so I will keep this short. All That Could Have Been is a live album that embodies everything that is good about the Nine Inch Nails. The track listing covers a huge section of Mr Reznors carrier, and if you would like to become familiar with a lot of their material, this is deffinitly a good album to start on (unless you are one of those people that hates life albums, I dont know if I'll ever understand you)
Notable Tracks- Terrible Lie, Hurt, and Sin

Pelican City- Rhode Island
This one got stuck into my hip hop section, check it out though. soooooo good.

Piano Magic- Disaffected
This album is nothing too special to me, but it is still deffinitly worth checking out. I don't know why this album doesn't "click" with me the way it seems like it would, but whatever, still awesome sounding throughout.
Notable Tracks- The Nostalgist, Disaffected, and Night of the Hunter.

Portishead- Roseland NYC live
With this legendary trip hop trio comes a legendary live performace captured perfectly across this album. Has almost every Portishead track that I consider essential (except for tracks off of Three, which was released years later) The haunting vocal melodies combined with spacy drums, guitars and strings cause for a truely beautiful scene. I wish I was their when this was made.
Notable Tracks- Roads, Cowboys and Sour Times.

The Postal Service- Give Up
Death Cab For Cuties frontman comes out with his debut electronica album, the only question is, whenever the fuck is he going to realize that an album of this magnitude needs a follow up? At this point it seems unluckly, although this album will not leave you unfullfilled. Brilliant electronic upbeat music combined with poppy lyrics and vocal melodies, this is deffinitly anouther one of those feel good albums (unless you listen to the lyrics, then you may become a tad depressed, but its totally worth it)
Notable Tracks- The District Sleeps Alone Tonight, Such Great Heights, and We Will Become Silhouettes.

Prodigy- Fat of the land
Another classic album you are probably sick of, but I do believe I would be hunted down and murdered (probably by the Prodigy too, they kind of seem like jerks.) if I did not mention how fantastic this band truely is. Now, they clearly reached the height of their fame when they were featured on one of the big shiny tune records, can't quite remember which one it was, but you know, who uses the INTERNET these days to find out anything....it was number 2 and it featured Breath. Anyways, thats the first I heard of them back when Big Shiny Tunes rocked the airwaves. This album is so full of energy you might find yourself using all your chi to spit out mantra, but I guess thats worth it.
Notable Tracks- Mindfields, Breath and Smack My Bitch Up.

On that note, The Original Matrix sound track actually a lot of good starting tracks for bands of these likes, and on the note of that soundtrack, lets talk about Rob D.

Rob Dougan- Furious Angels
This album is also hit and miss for me, but when it does hit it takes my breath away everytime. You have most likely heard the song Clubbed To Death, and while it is absolutely essential to this album, there is just so much more to mention. First off, just the pure production value of this album is off the charts. I have no idea how he managed to mix so many different sounds and have them all so crystal clear, he left absolutely not room for mediocracy in the sounds used. Once again, a lot of god damn epic energy across this album. Needs to be checked out, last time I looked it was out of circulation, so I guess you can't really feel bad downloading it? Well then go do that now.
Notable Tracks- Furious Angels, Clubbed to Death and One and the Same.

Rockysopp- The Understanding
Another band I am a huge fan off, but this is their album that really really does it for me. While I know in about one minute I am going to pick out the stand out tracks, I will mention that this album really really deserves a full listen too, due to no matter how many tracks I list, it won't get you the full extent of the styles employed on this album unless I list them all. Here goes though.
Notable Tracks- What Else Is Their?, Alpha Male and Dead To The World.

The Smashing Pumpkins- Ava Adore
Some would argue that the Smashing Pumpkins is purely a rock band and that this album lead to their downfall. I would tell them to fuck off and give it a real listen, I believe it is their best effort, and I am a huge fan. Nothing I can say about this band that hasnt been said a million times and same goes for this album. I love it though, and I believe you should too.
Notable Tracks- Tear, Pug and Ava Adore.

Sneaker Pimps- Bloodsport
This album is cottages, drinking beer on balconies, sunshine and one of those albums that just makes you remember all the good times you have had. No idea why, maybe for me it is connected to certain events, but in general I believe that the sound of it just makes you reflect on life, friends and other indescribable memories. I could not say enough, check it out for yourself.
Notable Tracks- Loretta Young Silks, Blood Sport, and Black Sheep.

Telefon Tel Aviv- Farhrenheit Fair Enough
So relaxing, and the drum loops are deffinitly something else. I would go to say that if Emancipator did not exists this album would be up there on the drum programming scale for me. I would just start at the start of the album and listen through, I dont even have track suggestions for this one. Pick any song, its good.

I believe thats it
Once again, I probably missed SO SO SO SO much and it kind of depresses me.
Whatever, It will come out soon enough.

Hip Hop

I thought I'd start with Hip Hop for two reasons. A) Its a very separete genre from the rest of my playlist, so i dont have to spend a lot of time mind fucking around my brain to figure out if it IS hip hop, B) As I am not that much of a fan of mainstream hip hop, hopefully this will bring some people to see how many good artists are really out there and C) I'm just way to bouncing right now to not be groovin'.

Only one album per artist, and the list is in no other order then alphabetical.

Aesop Rock- Labour Days.
What an album, this man is one of my favourite lyricists of all time AND has blockhead backing him up on the beats throughout the whole album. Fucking ill. I could not say enough about the metaphors he weaves. Now when talking about Labour Days, one must put an honorable mention out to the Daylight EP, which would have most likely taken the top space in my mind of Aesops albums, except for its length is capped out at 8 tracks, some of which appear on Labour Days.

While the album does take a bit of dip in quality towards the middle, it is still a masterpieces none the less. Most notable tracks are Daylight (Daylight has a companion track on the Daylight EP called Night Light, fully brings out the brilliance of the lyrics when played back to back), Bent Life, and the 9-5ers anthem.

Army Of Pharoes- Ritual of Battle
This album sadly enough is hit and miss, but it is a Babygrande (very notable Hip Hop label from Philadelphia) supergroup, so listening through this album may lead you to some new artists you were unaware of.
Notable Tracks- Bloody Tears, Murda Murda, Seven and Gun Ballad

Atmosphere- God Loves Ugly
Underground Hip Hop duo ACTUALLY making a notable amount of record sales? Yeah, they did it. With ANTS ever evolving beats and MC slugs constantly changing style they met up for their third album in which appeared to be a perfect time for their styles to cross. This album is a PERFECT example of why I like Underground hip hop more then most mainstream stuff. When is comes to mainstream rap, the record lable or whoever shoots off tonnes and tonnes of beats and then the MC shoots off a few verses that are completed unrelated. With God Loves Ugly, each beat FEELS like what Slug is talking about, and I find that that is what makes music a lot more relevant too the listeners, I want to hear what he's saying, and if i can vibe along, well thats just all the much better.
Notable tracks- God Loves Ugly, Saves the day and Fuck You Lucy.
Check this out.

Beastie Boys- Hello Nasty
Intergalactic planatary planatary intergalactic.
Enough said.

Binary Star- Masters of the Universe
Hip hop duo (so apparently i really like duo's?) One Be Lo and Senim Silla met in jail and formed Binary Star. Is that what makes them cool? No. Masters of the universe is, while they only ever had this album as a major release and it leaves you craving more, it still should become a staple of your Hip Hop playlist. One qoute on this album describes these two better then I ever could.
"its like a binary star is two stars that appear to be one star, but if you look at them close in reality its two stars revolving around eachother. Thats like what we are. Some cats would look at as like we are a group, when really we are just two MCs revolving around eachother"
Thats what this album sounds like, two excellent MC's sharing one vision and writing together in perfect sychronized rhymes.
Notable tracks- Honest expression, Solar Powered and KGB.

Blockhead- Downtown Science
This is just so epicly argueable, whether or not Music by Cavelight or Downtown Science is better. Most people would say Music by Cavelight, and I would say I had both these albums for years and would totally agree. Music by Cavelight is a fucking phenominal CD and can be played from start to finish and you will instantly fall in love with it. Now Downtown Science is a bit different, it takes a while and is an aquired taste to get into. Takes a few spins before you realize the innate beauty and brilliance that is this record. If you are new too Blockhead ( he does the beats for most Aesop Rock albums) I guess i would suggest checking out Music by Cavelight first, tracks such as You've got Mealstrom, Insomaniac Olympics, Carnivores Unite and Sunday Senance are all you would expect from Aesop's beat makers debut solo effort. But when you get past just vibing to the music and start analyizing the simple brilliance and experiments going on within the album of downtown science, I think most would argue that this album is one of the most brilliant instrumental hip hop albums out there.
Notable tracks- The First Snowfall, Quiet Storm and Roll Out The Red Carpet.

Gnarles Barkley- St Elsewhere
Not underground at all, by this point we have all heard it got sick of it and put it back on the shelf. Take it out again, skip past "Crazy" and give this full album a listen. Got damn good.

Immortal Technique- The revolutionary Volume 2
Immortal Technique took all of his rage in his rhymes that was displayed on The Revolutionary Volume One and channeled them into an album that has tighter flows, better beats and a way better production value. There is no filler with this album, excellent from start to finish.
Notable tracks- The Point of no Return, Harlem Streets and Industrial Revolution.
Ive been bumping to this one for years.

Jedi Mind Tricks- Violent by Design
I have no idea WHY i always come back to this album, its not as well produced, and some of it is filler and everyone is trying to find their own sound, I guess thats the charm of it. You can listen to this album and see where Jedi Mind branched off for all their other efforts, and the lack of having the best production in the world makes it sound ever so much more real. That and Jus Allah has a lot of verses in this one (he sounded a lot better back in Jedi Mind, his solo effort was a waste of a download for me. Not a huge fan). This album sounds like what it is, a bunch of guys finally getting serious about the Hip Hop scene that surrounds them and trying to make an album that relates to that. My ONE gripe with this album is that it doesn't have much continuity, each song sounds like it was written seperately from every other tracks, as oppose to most other Jedi Mind albums have a general theme.
Notable Tracks- Genghis Kahn, I against I and Deer Hunter. Retaliaton rocks life too.

King Syze- The Labour Union
I am not quite sure whether or not I should have included this album, due to a lot of it is filler. But there are deffinitly some key parts to this album that just sound epic, and if I was to hear a new King Syze record that develops on these sounds, I'm sure my life would be fucking rocked.
Notable tracks- The Labour Union, And Now, and The Best

Lupe Fiasco- The Cool
Once again, not underground at all, but it IS an awesome record from start to finish. While most mainstream hip hop (and one could argue most mainstream music in general) rely on a couple of singles to carry the album to the bank, you can tell Lupe tried to make you get the most for your money. While strangely enough it does not HAVE what one would think is the title track (The cool came out on his last record, dope track, check it) it does have an incrediable amount of tracks that are totally worth checking out. One can tell from the first major single off this album, Superstar, that I almost have to take back my comment saying that most mainstream hip hop does not write lyrics that coincide with the beats. I guess this is an exception. Check it out.
Notable tracks- Little Weapon, Put you On Game, Superstar

Outspace- Blood and Ashes
One of my favourite Hip hop records to date, fucking phenominal flows from start to finish, guest MC's used at the perfect points and an overall feeling of angst overpowers through this entire album. This album pretty much speaks for itself, check it out.
Notable Tracks- The Revolution, Cutthroats, and Fire And Ice.

Pelican City- Rhode Island.
Back before Danger Mouse got all way to famous for his solo efforts, Pelican City's Rhode Island does something that more intstrumental albums should, write about their surroundings without the use of lyrics. Each track is named after a different location, and each track has a different vibe that is suppose to mirror the location it is describing. When i throw this album on I have images in my head of what these places may look like, and hopefully one day I'll get to cruise through Rhode Island and listen to this album on repeat. Yeah, thats right, this album is worth travelling to Rhode Island for.
Notable Tracks- Chestnut park....... and then the rest of it. Just listen from start to finish.

RJD2- Loose Ends
I just got into this album today and I will talk about it after the effect has fully sunk in. Its good though, listen to it.
Seasons and Moonlit skies are just such good tracks.

Shad K- The Old Prince
I would like to claim that this album reminds me of The Fresh Prince and A Tribe called Quest only way more modern, but that would probably turn a lot of people off this man. He takes everything that was good about that old style of hip hop and reincarnates it into something truely unique. Once again, from start to finish just unbelievable, but i guess I'll go through and find what tracks standout most.
Notable Tracks- I dont Like To, Brother, and The Old Prince Still Lives at Home

Notorious B.I.G. and Frank Sinatra mash up
It is what it is, two men way to god damn pimp for their own time mashed up. Once again, extremely Hit and miss, still cool to listen too though.
Notable Tracks- Juicy- New York New York, Come On-My Way of Life, and Everyday Struggle- A Day In The Life Of A Fool.

There is just so much more out there, but this is what I've been listening too lately as far as hip hop is concerned.
If anyone starts to read this blog, I'm totally open to checking out any new artists or suggestions anyone has for me.

I think I'm going to make some lists

Yeah, so i think I'm going to spend the next couple hours going through my I-Tunes and picking out albums that are just simply fucking astounding and I guess I'll make new posts for new genres.
If anyone actually reads this, chances are I have to apologize for "mis labeling" a band they enjoy, I do apologize for this, but alas, genres are damn argueable.
These lists are going to be based on what I am listening to at the current moment, and then hopefully I will get chances to update with album reviews when I come across new things. For the moment though, I have to just review in general what Ive got.
